Le Vannais Hit Zanzibar

Following 6 months living in a landlocked country and 1 month travelling in a landlocked country we were in much need of some beach action. After our safari we made haste to the island of Zanzibar. Never passing up the opportunity of a holiday in the sun, ma and pa Le Vannais joined us for 10 days.

Treating us to 5 star luxury in the best hotel we've ever stayed in (and probably ever likely to in the near future) we spent 9 fabulous nights at The Breezes Beach Club and Spa. Booked in for half board Liam and I, like true backpackers, generally ate as much as we could and used as much of the complimentary facilities as possible.

When we weren't lying down (trying to get the food to digest) we were off on trips. A beautiful sail around the Indian Ocean with great snorkeling and a lobster lunch. A walk in the Janzani forest to get up close and personal with some red colobus monkeys and a walk around lovely (if unbelievably hot) Stone Town.

There was one disastrous day trip involving seeing dolphins. Where I had an allergic reaction to a jelly fish sting, mum almost had her arm wrenched out by the guide trying to help her into the boat and Liam cut his foot (although Liam did enjoy the experience as he was the only one quick enough to get in the water and swim with them). Dad, who refused to even put the snorkel on, just wore the look of "I told you this was a bad idea"....

Back to nicer things; I turned 31. How did 31 creep up on me like that?! But was a great birthday with a massage, facial, great food and wine and even a cake and happy birthday sung to me by the waiters.

Ma and Pa, we owe you big time! For now it's back to the tent on the beach, goodbye Princess Joanna (Liam's new nickname for me) hello backpacking.
